At last I got to fly for aerial shots of the Ellipse formation on North Down (SU 057-679). It's in canola (oilseed rape) on the A361 south-west of Beckhampton, just a couple hundred feet from the old Roman road. It was reported May 5th, and its size is about 200 feet from the north edge of the ellipse to the south-most grapeshot.
THESE PICTURES HAVE BEEN DIGITALLY ALTERED. If you look at anyone else's photos, you will see that the ellipse is actually a bit misshapen -- but I have used PhotoShop to make the design look like the artists undoubtedly intended it to be.
As we flew around the formation I noticed that from one perspective the ellipse appeared to be a circle. Not only that, but the part which is 'eclipsed; by the ellipse -- which really IS a circle -- then appears to be an ellipse! (This is not a PhotoShop trick.) Look at the three grapeshot circles to orient yourself to the perspective angle.
