REPORT ON CROP CIRCLE AT LOOSE BOTTOM, FALMER, NEAR BRIGHTON, EAST SUSSEX – appeared 30 May 2014

By ANDY THOMAS

This single clockwise circle in barley can be seen clearly, if distantly, lying to the east of the B2123 road when driving north from Woodingdean to Falmer. The Falmer area has been host to several crop formations over the last few decades since the first recorded one (another single circle) in 1974, peaking with a flurry of more complex patterns in the early to mid 2000s. Since then Falmer has been dormant until now. Indeed, this is the first official crop formation anywhere in East or West Sussex for several years; quite a contrast to old times given that for a while in the 1990s the county regularly received around 10-12 formations each summer.

This new circle diameter165 feet, which seems to hark back to the phenomenon’s beginnings in its simplicity, is further west along the same field that played host to a more sophisticated design, also in barley, in 2004.  The best view of it can be obtained by walking east towards Lewes along the South Downs Way footpath (which can be accessed from a lay-by on the B2123) and looking northwards. The rather amusing Ordnance Survey name for the area, ‘Loose Bottom’, is unknown to all but seasoned locals.

Reports and photos from a Brighton resident who entered the formation a few days after its appearance suggest that the circle has a complex and attractive centre with a tight central twist, while the surrounding lay, though probably initially neat, is making a rapid recovery. A few potential crease marks were reported in places, but on the whole little stem damage was apparent.

The circle lies within half a mile or so from the Brighton and Hove Albion football stadium, built in recent years on the very field in which a triplet crop formation appeared in 1990. Few players are probably aware that they are sweating it out on the very site where once a crop circle lay. Rather aptly, it has been remarked more than once (particularly by those who objected to the site’s development) that from a distance - see photo - the stadium looks like a huge UFO has rather obtrusively landed in an otherwise rural scene…
